The masterplan proposal for Berlin Brandenburg 2070 stems from the awareness of the exponential change to which the big cities will be subject in the years to come and the implications that these changes will have on the surrounding territories. The reflection starts with the analysis of the political-formal changes to which the “generic Metropolis” meet.
The shape of the city will undergo continuous changes in a very short time. The will of the project is to guide the exponential change of the urban form instead of defining a finite design, so that the development of the infrastructures becomes the regulating element of the development of the place and the collective identity, intervening on the main aspects that will characterize these changes and allow small and large companies to adapt and align themselves with the needs of the future. The proposal for Berlin Brandenburg 2070 wants to experience the overcoming of the idea of Metropolis, with the creation of a Post-Metropolis. This is due to the increasingly precarious balance of the big city, where the urban morphological and typological elements lose their meaning and importance, making a given urban space anachronistic, whether it is conceived on a neighborhood, urban or even a complex system like the metropolis scale. The vision for Berlin Brandenburg wants to transform the Metropolis system into a complex entity that unites and supports all the formal and economic-social policies of the current territorialcondition that are designed. What will be the characteristics of future cities and territories? What problems will they have? How to intervene? The main elements of the Post-Metropolis are quantity, expansion, extension, speed, cosmopolitanism, the relocation of materials and techniques, the indifference of the landscape and the relations with the surrounding elements, climate problems and energy. The program covers a wide range of interventions on the scale of local and global risks.Strategies attentive to places and microclimates are articulated, which fit into an overall vision for the safeguard and controlled development of the Berlin Brandenburg metropolitan area. Future dynamics will have to reinforce and rewrite the complexity between urban, industrial and natural, strengthening the resilience of cities and becoming an opportunity for inclusion. Ours is a “pragmatically radical” and visionary masterplan idea for the future metropolitan region of Berlin Brandenburg. A new vision of spaces, territories, cultures, economies, industries, agriculture and sustainable development of future cities.
